What Is Bobtail Insurance?
Bobtail insurance is liability-only coverage for your truck when it’s being driven without a trailer attached. “Bobtailing” simply means running the tractor on its own, no cargo, no trailer.
It applies in situations like:
- Driving away after dropping off a load at the destination
- Heading to pick up your next assigned load with no trailer attached
- Deadheading between jobs under your carrier’s dispatch
Bobtail insurance covers third-party bodily injury and property damage if you cause an accident while running bobtail. It does not cover damage to your own truck. It does not cover cargo, because there isn’t any cargo to cover when you’re bobtailing.
